A note from Steve...
|
|
Stop
talking and get started. Any action leads to the
proper action if we continue to think and evaluate.
I've had many interesting conversations and
reactions to my style of management and business
development. In fact, I've sometimes been laughed at
when I actually admitted that I purposely acted in a
certain way. My theory has always been "READY, FIRE,
AIM!" Which is in somewhat direct opposition to the
traditional "Ready, Aim, Fire." believers. My
disagreement with the traditional thinking is that
too often we get mired in over thinking, over
talking, and over analyzing. I'm a firm believer
that once we get moving, we can make corrections on
the fly. I was taught early on that when presented
with a formidable task such as a long climb up a
giant set of stairs, we can either "Stare up the
Steps?" or "Step up the Stairs!" I choose to get
going and figure out the difficulties along the way.
Action beats no action. Whether you apply it to
coaching, teaching, playing, parenting, or business,
getting started is often the toughest part. Maybe at
this time of year you are considering whether or not
you want to be a youth coach or an assistant coach,
and maybe you are trying to gather enough
information to insure your success. My advice is do
it! Jump in and get involved and somewhere along the
way you'll figure out how to do it right. In the
mean time you're teaching, and learning, and having
fun. I've got to run, I'll see at the field!

The Fear Factor - Aside
from the lack of learned skills, the #1 obstacle
preventing young ball players from succeeding is fear.
It may be the fear of being hit by the ball, or fear of
failure (striking out), or simply fear of making a
mental mistake. Picture walking into a total pitch black
room or worse yet a scary pitch black unfamiliar
basement. You have no idea of what to expect or what is
waiting around the corner. It's very scary - especially
for a young child. The more information you get before
entering that dark room, the less scary it is. Knowing
how many steps or where the light switch is will take
away a little of that fear. Getting past the fear in
baseball and softball is the same. The more information
we give our young players, the more easily they will
cope with and overcome their fear. The key is making our
actions learned skills rather than just instinct
reactions, because before we learn the skills, often
times are reactions are incorrect. The best example is
fear of being hit by a pitched ball. We have all seen
the inexperienced player, reacting to a ball coming
toward them by opening their body to the path of the
ball and exposing their front (softer side) and face to
the ball. The natural reaction is to want to see the
ball. Unfortunately they usually see the ball all to
well when it hits them somewhere that it hurts. The
proper technique is to turn away and turn their back
side to the path of the ball. This way if they are hit,
they get hit in the back of the leg, the buttocks, the
back of their torso, or the back of the helmet
(remember, the back of their head is totally protected
by the helmet). It still may hurt a little, but they
shouldn't sustain and injury. The only way young player
will learn this is if we the coaches make it a part of
our teaching and training. You can practice with softer
ball, wiffle balls, tennis balls, incrediballs, or
socks. Make it a part of your early season drills and
our young players will be on their way to overcoming one
of the fears of the game. If you'd like to learn more
drills or techniques for helping you players overcome
this or some of the other fears of the game, please
visit Grand Slam and talk to me or any of the Grand Slam
Coaching Staff. We're really not too scary!
Make it a great season!
