Purpose Driven Drills
As I visit camps, clinics, and instructions it has
always been curious to me why some athletes are
vigorously attempting every repetition while others
are clearly just going through the motions. It’s not
defined by those with talent and those without, so I
have always suspected that it’s based on
understanding the purpose of the drill. If all we do
is constantly repeat "swing down" without ever
explaining why, then how can we expect a dedication
to drills that encourage "swinging down". I recently
tested this with two brothers at clinic that I was
helping with. The brothers were 3 years apart in age
had totally opposite approaches to a specific drill.
I stopped the drill and asked them to write down the
purpose of the drill. The one who was working hard
at the drill had the correct written response. The
other brother did not and therefore wasn't able to
commit to the drill. And, by the way, it was the
younger brother who had the right answer. Once I
took time to explain the purpose of the drill both
brothers resumed with added enthusiasm.
This got me to thinking how this may apply to many
areas of our lives. If only we knew the purpose for
practice maybe we would practice with a purpose. In
whatever your teaching, take time to help the
student understand what each phase of learning will
do. I think you'll like the results.

You can hit, you can throw, but can you hustle?
In baseball, a five-tool player is one who excels at
hitting for average,
hitting for power, base running skills and speed,
throwing ability, and
fielding abilities. I think I could make a legitimate
case for "being able
to think the game" being considered the sixth tool. But,
that's a discussion
for another day. Over the years we have seen thousands
of exceptional
athletes visit and train at Grand Slam. We have also
seen a good number of
great hitters or great throwers fall short of their
goals because they
didn't possess all the necessary tools to move to the
next level. There are
a few exceptional athletes that can succeed on one tool,
but the vast
majority of players advance because they show
versatility. What are you
doing to improve all five tools? Coach Karl and all of
our coaches at Grand
Slam have worked with many players to fine tune their
hitting an pitching
technique and those players have experienced success.
Now we want you to
master the other three tools. This year we're proud to
announce that we are
adding specialty classes for those interested in honing
those other skills
of speed, strength, quickness, and defense. Please look
for further
information at Grand Slam or at
www.grandslammalvern.com.
I hope you are all having a wonderful summer. |

We are especially proud to announce that our Softball Camp this
summer includes three instructors who are current collegiate
players.
Both Nancy O’Connor and Krystin Montoro play for Lock Haven
University. Lock Haven’s Softball team were Division II Champs
in 2006 and runners up in 2007. Nancy was voted All PSAC in 2007
as a sophomore.
Kim Lempa plays for Towson University at the Division I level
and saw significant playing time as a freshman during the 2007
season.
We know the girls as Grand Slam employees in the Family
Entertainment side of the business, now this year they are
lending their superb skills to our camp. Thank you girls! |

Colin Tessier-Kay played on the 2007 Devon Strafford Little
League Junior Division District 27 Championship team and on the
2007 Grand Slam U14 AAU team. This past spring, he pitched and
played first for the Conestoga High School Junior Varsity team.
This summer he is playing for the Devon Strafford Seniors
Division, and with Conestoga Junior Legion where he struck out
nine and allowed only 1 hit in a complete game win over Exeter
in the Reading Memorial Day Tournament. He has worked with Karl
and the Grand Slam staff for the past 2 seasons. “Coach Keck has
helped me improve my skills tremendously, and has been one of
the most positive and encouraging coaches I have ever had the
chance to work with.”
